Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has praised Stanley Nwabali for his contribution to Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
The Barea took a shock lead in the 16th minute when Ehsan Kari finished off a swift transition to beat Nwabali and put the visitors ahead, although there were questions over the position of the goalscorer in the build-up.
Nigeria eventually turned the game around through debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor, but Nwabali also played his part in ensuring the Super Eagles remained within touching distance of Madagascar.
The Chippa United goalkeeper produced an important save in the 50th minute to prevent the visitors from extending their advantage and kept Nigeria in the contest as Chelle’s side pushed for a response.
Nwabali had also faced questions over his club situation after leaving Chippa United in February following a request for his release and spending about a month without a club before returning to the South African outfit in July.
However, Chelle was pleased with the goalkeeper’s display and highlighted his ability to respond when Madagascar threatened.
“Nwabali did well because they had a chance to score, but Nwabali at this moment particularly was very good,” Chelle said after the match.
The victory handed Nigeria three points from their opening Group L fixture and put the Super Eagles at the top of the group ahead of their next assignment.
Nigeria will travel to Bissau on Tuesday to face Guinea-Bissau at the 24 September Stadium in another important Group L encounter, while Madagascar will host Tanzania on the same day.
