Super Eagles winger Femi Azeez has completed a £15 million deadline-day transfer from Millwall to Premier League side Brighton, NigeriaSoccernet.com reports.
The move takes Azeez into England’s top flight and adds another Nigerian presence to the Premier League, with the winger joining compatriot Yohana at Brighton.
Nigeria’s Premier League contingent currently includes Yohana and Azeez at Brighton, Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi at Fulham, Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka at Coventry City, Semi Ajayi at Hull City, Chuba Akpom at Ipswich Town, Benjamin Fredrick at Brentford and Ola Aina at Nottingham Forest.
For Azeez, the transfer marks a major milestone in his career, with the £15 million fee underscoring his progress and Brighton’s belief in his ability to compete at the highest level of English football.
The growing presence of Nigerian players in the Premier League could also boost the Super Eagles as the national team prepares for a number of important international assignments.
However, not every Nigeria-eligible player currently featuring in the Premier League can be regarded as part of the Super Eagles’ established contingent.
Tim Iroegbunam, for instance, should not yet be included among Nigeria’s confirmed Premier League representatives because of the uncertainty surrounding his international future. Michael Kayode, Tosin Adarabioyo and Ethan Nwaneri have also not indicated any clear commitment to representing Nigeria at senior level.
Until their international positions become clearer, they cannot reasonably be listed among players committed to the Super Eagles.
Azeez’s arrival at Brighton therefore represents a positive development for both the winger and Nigeria, giving the Super Eagles another potential Premier League option as the national team continues to strengthen its pool of top-flight players.
