Former Super Eagles forward, Mutiu Adepoju, has thrown his weight behind Nigeria’s national team, expressing confidence that they can secure the maximum six points in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, Nigeriasoccernet.com gathered.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winners will face Rwanda in Kigali today (Friday) before hosting Zimbabwe next Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Following an underwhelming start to the qualifiers, the Super Eagles find themselves in fifth place in Group C, with just three points from four matches. Benin Republic lead the group with 8 points, followed by Rwanda and South Africa (7 points each), and Lesotho (5 points).

Despite Nigeria's precarious position, Adepoju remains optimistic, acknowledging the difficult task ahead but insisting that victory in both matches is achievable.

“The Super Eagles have the quality to beat Rwanda in Kigali and Zimbabwe in Nigeria," Adepoju told BSN Sports.
“The team has no excuse—they are condemned to win both matches if they want to qualify for the World Cup. Six points will send a strong message that Nigeria is serious about making it to the 2026 World Cup.”

Adepoju also noted that African teams have significantly improved, making it more challenging for Nigeria, but he believes the Super Eagles can still turn their fortunes around.

“Nigerians won’t be happy if the team fails to qualify for the World Cup again. Mathematically, they still have a chance, but they must start winning now.”
