Former France international Emmanuel Petit has praised compatriot Jeremy Jacquet, saying the young defender is improving Virgil van Dijk rather than the other way round.

Jacquet, a newcomer to the France squad, has made an impressive start to life with Les Bleus, following his strong opening to the season at Liverpool. He has played in both of France’s first two matches since receiving his international call-up.

The 21-year-old central defender moved to Liverpool last summer, although the transfer was completed at the beginning of the year. Jacquet has made seven appearances for the Reds.
