Alex Iwobi sets sights on Kolo Toure’s Premier League appearance record

Alex Iwobi says he wants to overtake Kolo Toure as the African player with the most Premier League appearances after moving into second place on the all-time list.

The Nigeria international reached 329 league appearances during Fulham’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at Villa Park last Saturday.

The milestone took the 30-year-old beyond former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, with Iwobi having previously been level with him on 328 appearances.

Iwobi’s Premier League record has been built across three clubs. He played 100 times for Arsenal, made 123 appearances for Everton and has now featured 106 times for Fulham since joining the London club.

Toure, the former Ivory Coast international, remains the record-holder with 352 Premier League appearances. Iwobi therefore needs 24 more matches to move beyond the former defender’s total.

While pleased to have reached second place, Iwobi said his attention was already on attempting to claim the record.

“It’s hard for me to cherish the memories. I’d like to keep on looking ahead, so it’s a nice little stat to have,” Iwobi told Fulham’s official television channel, FFC TV.

“But I’m trying to break the record. I think Kolo Toure is up there, so I’ll keep my eyes going forward and see if I can break that.”

Iwobi has scored once in nine league appearances for Fulham this season.
