Bendel Insurance head coach Kennedy Boboye has raised concerns over the shortage of natural goal scorers in the Nigeria Premier Football League, saying the problem is affecting clubs across the country, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Boboye spoke after his side edged Ikorodu City 2-1 on Wednesday, with the coach admitting that his players still need to improve their finishing despite regular work on converting chances in training.
“Yeah, we still keep working because it’s (converting scoring chances) something we do every day,” Boboye said.
“Taking our goal-scoring opportunities in games, we do them in training sessions.
“But when it comes to games like this, if we don’t take them, it becomes a problem for us. Actually, it’s a problem everywhere in the country because, I’m sorry to say this, we don’t actually have quality strikers in the league.
“We (coaches) are just managing. Most of the strikers you see playing for Bendel Insurance are not point men. They are players who play from the sides, but we decided to convert them (to attackers) just to make up for the team.”
The victory over Ikorodu City provided Bendel Insurance with three important points, but Boboye's comments highlighted an area the technical crew continues to work on as the NPFL season progresses.
The coach will now hope his converted attackers can become more clinical in front of goal as Insurance look to build momentum in their campaign.
