CAF Insiders Deny Declining Confidence in Motsepe Amid Leadership Speculation

Published on: 15 October 2026

Officials close to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have pushed back against reports of growing dissatisfaction with president Patrice Motsepe, insisting that confidence in his leadership remains strong, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The response follows a report by The Guardian suggesting that some figures within African football are becoming increasingly unhappy with the South African businessman’s leadership of the continental governing body.

The report also mentioned former Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o and other influential personalities in connection with possible moves to challenge for the CAF presidency when Motsepe eventually leaves office.

Motsepe took over as CAF president in March 2021 and has since overseen efforts to improve the commercial value of African football competitions and increase financial rewards for participating teams.

The CAF president has already stated that he will not seek a third term when his current tenure ends in 2029, leaving the question of his eventual successor open.

Despite the reported tensions, CAF insiders have rejected suggestions that Motsepe is losing significant support within the organisation.

The latest response comes amid wider discussions about CAF’s leadership, the distribution of football revenues and the future direction of the sport on the continent.

However, the identities of those allegedly dissatisfied with Motsepe and the extent of any opposition to his leadership remain unclear.
