Manchester United striker Chido Obi is reportedly on the verge of joining Dutch club Willem II on a season-long loan, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirming that the deal has been agreed, NigeriaSoccernet.com reports.
Romano reports that Manchester United have authorised the 18-year-old forward to undergo his medical ahead of the move. The agreement will run until the end of the season and does not contain an option for Willem II to sign the player permanently.
“Chido Obi from Manchester United to Willem II, here we go! Deal done for the striker to join Dutch side on season-long loan. #MUFC authorise medical taking place today. No buy option clause included; loan move until the end of the season,” Romano wrote.
Born in Denmark to Nigerian parents, Obi is a Danish youth international and has emerged as one of the promising young forwards in English football.
He attracted considerable attention during his time in Arsenal’s academy, where he developed a reputation as a prolific goalscorer before leaving the Gunners for Manchester United.
The move to Old Trafford was regarded as an important step in Obi’s development, but opportunities to establish himself in United’s senior side have been limited.
His proposed switch to Willem II should provide the teenager with the chance to gain regular senior-team experience and compete consistently at a professional level.
A productive spell in the Netherlands could also help Obi improve his consistency, gain greater confidence and demonstrate his ability to challenge for a place in Manchester United’s long-term plans.
At 18, the forward has plenty of time to continue developing, with regular first-team football at Willem II potentially providing an important platform in his progression.
