Each player in Nigeria’s D’Tigress has received the naira equivalent of $100,000 following the team’s victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Cote d’Ivoire.
The payment was confirmed by the Presidency on its X handle and forms part of a presidential reward package announced by President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, in early August 2025.
D’Tigress beat Mali 78–64 in the final to win a record fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and their seventh overall.
“Today, the rewards I promised our D’Tigress have been fully redeemed,” the Presidency wrote.
“Each player has received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official has received the equivalent of $50,000, completing their package of cash rewards, national honours and three-bedroom homes in Abuja.”
The announcement said the payments completed the cash element of the package, alongside national honours and the allocation of three-bedroom houses in Abuja.
“For the first time, a Federal Government has fulfilled this scale of presidential sporting rewards in full within one year,” the Presidency added.
“We had to follow the processes required by law and ensure that every commitment was properly implemented. That took time, but a promise made must be a promise kept.”
The statement also said outstanding payments promised to Nigeria’s women’s senior football team, the Super Falcons, were nearing completion.
“The outstanding cash rewards for our Super Falcons are also being concluded,” it said.
The Super Falcons players and officials have already received the title documents for their house allocations and their National Honours certificates.
The Presidency added that the promise of houses and national honours made to the Super Eagles players had also been fulfilled.
“Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word,” the statement said.
“My promise to every Nigerian Athlete is make NIGERIA proud and come back to a grateful Nation.
“Congratulations once again, our athletes. Nigeria is proud of you.”
