Nigeria’s Super Falcons and young stars nominated for 2026 CAF Awards

Nigeria’s Super Falcons, Christiana Uzoma, Janet Akekoromowei and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi have all been shortlisted in the women’s categories for the 2026 CAF Awards.

The nominations were announced by CAF on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The awards ceremony will take place in Lagos, Nigeria, on Monday, December 7, 2026.

The Super Falcons are in contention for Women’s National Team of the Year, despite a disappointing 2026 WAFCON campaign. Nigeria were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 1-0 defeat by eventual champions Cameroon and also failed to qualify for the 2027 World Cup.

Uzoma, 17, has been nominated for Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year after a strong season with Edo Queens. She impressed in both the NWFL and the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifiers before captaining the Falconets at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

She took on the captaincy after regular skipper Joy Igbokwe was unable to travel because of visa issues.

Uzoma’s displays for club and country subsequently earned her a first senior call-up to the Super Falcons squad for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Qualifiers.

She will compete for the goalkeeper award against Cameroon’s Michaely Bihina, who won the Golden Glove at WAFCON 2026, as well as Morocco’s Khadija Er-Rmichi, South Africa’s Andile Dlamini and Ghana’s Cynthia Konlan.

Nigeria have two nominees in the 10-player shortlist for Women’s Young Player of the Year, with Adegbuyi and Akekoromowei both included.

Adegbuyi, 16, plays for FC Robo and was named 2025/26 NWFL Player of the Season and Super Six MVP after scoring 11 goals.

She also won the Most Valuable Player award at the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup in Yamoussoukro. The forward was recently released from the Super Falcons camp so she could join the Flamingos for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Akekoromowei, 18, plays for SL Benfica and has been a prolific scorer for the Falconets. She has since received a call-up to the Super Falcons squad for their Olympic qualifiers against Comoros.

The winners will be determined through votes from the CAF Technical Committee, media representatives, national team captains and coaches.
