Christopher Nkunku scored a first-half hat-trick to reach 50 Bundesliga goals as RB Leipzig thrashed Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0 and secured a club-record eighth successive home win in the top flight.
Frankfurt’s run without a league clean sheet was extended to 12 matches after only 45 seconds. Neal El Aynaoui’s cross travelled across the penalty area and Ezechiel Banzuzi arrived at the far post to finish from close range.
Leipzig doubled their advantage four minutes later, with Antonio Nusa creating the opening. The Norway international powered past his marker on the left before cutting the ball back for Nkunku, who guided a finish into the far corner.
Although Frankfurt recovered from their poor start and enjoyed much of the first half, Adi Hutter’s side struggled to turn possession into clear opportunities. Ritsu Doan and Ansgar Knauff were both kept out by Leipzig goalkeeper Marten Vandervoordt.
Those saves proved important as Leipzig struck twice more before half-time. Nkunku’s 50th Bundesliga goal came after Frankfurt goalkeeper Noah Atubolu had stopped an audacious flick from Romulo Cardoso, leaving the French forward to score from the rebound.
Nkunku then completed his hat-trick when Atubolu could only parry Banzuzi’s low effort into his path. The Leipzig forward made no mistake, putting his side four goals ahead at the interval.
Frankfurt’s focus after the restart was to limit the damage, but their resistance lasted only nine minutes. Nusa drove directly at the visitors’ defence before finishing into the bottom corner at the near post to make it 5-0.
Leipzig were given a reprieve shortly after the hour mark when Castello Lukeba lifted the ball over the crossbar from only a few yards out, despite appearing to have a straightforward chance to score.
Frankfurt did concede a sixth goal late on, however. Tidiam Gomis carried the ball through the middle of the pitch before finding the far corner with his finish.
The result is only Frankfurt’s second defeat in seven away matches, but they remain in the bottom half of the table after conceding 15 goals across their five league outings.
Leipzig move into the top five and have now beaten Frankfurt in seven of their 11 Bundesliga home meetings.
Nkunku was named Flashscore’s Man of the Match.
