Nigeria’s Super Falcons took a significant step towards the third round of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic qualifying competition with a 2-0 victory over Comoros in the first leg of their second-round tie.
Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu scored in the second half at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Friday to give Nigeria a comfortable advantage ahead of Tuesday’s return match.
The sides were level at half-time, but the Comoros defence was breached three minutes after the restart. Alozie reacted quickest to a headed assist and finished from close range in the 48th minute.
Nigeria doubled their lead 11 minutes later when Kanu met a well-flighted corner and headed the ball into the net.
Although the match was played in Ikenne, Comoros were officially the home team for the first leg. They were unable to stage the fixture in their own country because they do not have a CAF-approved stadium.
The second leg will be played at the same venue on Tuesday, 13 October. The team winning the tie on aggregate will advance to the third round, where they will meet either Morocco or DR Congo.
Nigeria received a bye into the second round, while Comoros progressed after an emphatic first-round victory over Sudan. They won the tie 30-0 on aggregate, following a 17-0 victory in the first leg and a 13-0 success in the second.
The Super Falcons entered the Olympic qualifier looking to recover from a difficult 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in Morocco. Their tournament ended with a 1-0 defeat by the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon, who went on to win the competition.
That result also denied Nigeria automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria were then given another route to the World Cup through the African play-in tournament, but their hopes ended with a 2-1 defeat by South Africa.
The Super Falcons will now look to complete the job against Comoros on Tuesday and secure their place in the next stage of the Olympic qualifying process.
