Tengstedt leads Toulouse fightback as Monaco held to 2-2 draw

Monaco moved to the top of Ligue 1 after six games despite surrendering a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw with Toulouse at Stade Louis II.

The result extended Monaco’s unbeaten start to the season, while Toulouse avoided defeat for the third time in their past five away meetings with Les Monegasques. Toulouse’s own unbeaten run now stands at three matches.

Filipe Luis’ side created most of the early danger in a cagey opening, although neither team initially managed to establish control.

Monaco almost took the lead in unusual fashion after 15 minutes. Lamine Camara’s driven ball into the Toulouse penalty area struck two defenders before falling to Mathys Deterbout, whose close-range effort was lifted over the goalkeeper but came back off the crossbar.

The chance appeared to give the hosts greater belief, and they went ahead shortly before the half-hour mark. Aleksandr Golovin delivered a cross into the six-yard area, where Edan Diop met it with a well-timed header from six yards.

It was Diop’s first goal for the club and gave Monaco a platform to build on. They doubled their advantage nine minutes later when Matthis Abline produced a fine individual finish.

Toulouse struggled to deal with Monaco’s high press, allowing Abline space to unleash a powerful effort from the edge of the area that flew past Guillaume Restes. The goal was also Abline’s first for Les Monegasques.

Monaco appeared to be in control, but Toulouse were given a route back into the match soon after the restart. Nazinho was penalised for pulling down Mark McKenzie during a corner, and Casper Tengstedt converted the resulting penalty with a clean finish.

The visitors’ quick response changed the momentum of the game. They completed the recovery in the 59th minute when Sion Oppong guided Tengstedt’s cross into the net.

Tengstedt’s assist completed an immediate personal contribution to the turnaround, while Oppong, like Diop and Abline, scored his first goal for a new club.

The match opened up in the closing stages as Monaco pushed for a winner and Toulouse looked for opportunities on the break. Toulouse goalkeeper Restes kept the score level with a sprawling save to deny Golovin’s sharply struck free-kick.

The visitors held on to secure a point, leaving Monaco to reflect on surrendering a two-goal lead. Monaco nevertheless leapfrogged Lille at the summit of Ligue 1, while Toulouse maintained their unbeaten sequence.

Flashscore named Casper Tengstedt of Toulouse as the Man of the Match.
