Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been named HT Spor’s Player of the Month for August after making a strong start to the season with Galatasaray.
The Nigerian forward has scored six goals and provided two assists in four appearances for Galatasaray this season, making him the Turkish Super Lig’s leading scorer.
Osimhen’s recognition comes as his influence on the Turkish club continues to attract attention. HT Spor selected him for the monthly award following his impressive performances at the beginning of the campaign.
His importance to Galatasaray has been underlined by the team’s preparations for their Champions League meeting with Sporting CP, which Osimhen will miss tonight.
The striker’s absence has prompted debate in Turkey about how significantly Galatasaray’s level is affected when he is unavailable. The contrast between the team with Osimhen and without him has become a central part of the discussion surrounding his contribution.
Turkish football pundit Cem Dizdar said: "The Osimhen effect in Galatasaray was already predictable. These stats already make him the country's number one player in terms of wage efficiency, championship efficiency, and team strength efficiency. Most likely, we'll start talking about what might happen in his absence any moment now. So you started your sentence that way too: Unfortunately, Osimhen is out.
"For instance, no one is thinking about Lemina's or Singo's absence with this kind of intensity. They're important too, of course, but this stat shows just how decisive Osimhen's absence is in terms of weight, and therefore how decisive his presence is as well."
Dizdar’s comments placed particular emphasis on the difference between Osimhen’s impact and that of other important Galatasaray players. While he acknowledged the significance of Lemina and Singo, he argued that the statistics demonstrate how decisive Osimhen is to the team.
The award reflects the Nigerian’s immediate influence since the start of the season. His six goals and two assists have come across only four appearances, a return that has established him as the Turkish Super Lig’s top scorer.
Galatasaray will now face Sporting CP without the player whose form has made such a significant contribution to their campaign. Osimhen’s absence provides an early test of the team’s ability to maintain its level without its leading scorer.
