Arsenal are preparing a renewed attempt to sign Julian Alvarez at the start of 2027 after Atletico Madrid became willing to negotiate over the Argentina international.
The Gunners’ summer pursuit of the former Manchester City forward ended without a deal, with Atletico Madrid refusing to part with their leading striker.
Alvarez caused surprise at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by publicly expressing his desire to leave the LaLiga club. Barcelona was understood to be his preferred destination.
However, amid an increasingly hostile exchange between the two Spanish clubs, Atletico Madrid confirmed they would not sell Alvarez to Barcelona. The player was also unconvinced by the prospect of returning to the Premier League at that stage.
Arsenal’s interest has remained, and manager Mikel Arteta is now planning a fresh approach during the January transfer window.
According to reports from TEAMtalk, Alvarez, 26, remains unhappy about the prospect of staying at Atletico Madrid over the long term. Los Rojiblancos are reportedly prepared to discuss a transfer with Arsenal.
The main obstacle is Atletico Madrid’s valuation. Sources close to Alvarez indicate he is now open to a move to north London, provided Arteta’s side can come close to the €120M asking price in the mid-season market.
Alvarez has had a limited role under Diego Simeone so far this season, making no LaLiga starts and scoring zero goals.
