Eguavoen urges Super Falcons to respect Comoros in Olympic qualifier

Super Falcons interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has called on Nigeria to avoid complacency when they face Comoros in the second round of the 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers.

Comoros will host the 10-time African champions in the first leg at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne on Friday (today). The second leg will also be played at the same venue next Tuesday.

Nigeria enter the tie with a stronger record and a squad featuring greater experience, but Eguavoen believes those advantages will count for little unless his players approach both matches with the right mentality.

Comoros reached this stage after producing a commanding result in the previous round, defeating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.

That scoreline has underlined the need for Nigeria to remain alert, with Eguavoen insisting that his side must respect their opponents rather than assume qualification is guaranteed.

The interim coach is confident the Super Falcons can advance to the next round, but said their priority must be to follow their strategy and perform effectively on the pitch.

“I believe no team can come here and survive. But we are not looking down on anyone. We’re not looking down on our opponents, really, with all respect. We stick to our game plan and just make sure we deliver,” Eguavoen told reporters in Ikenne.

The two matches will determine which team progresses in the qualification campaign for the 2028 Olympic Games. Nigeria will be expected to draw on their pedigree as one of Africa’s leading women’s football nations, while Comoros will aim to build on their emphatic first-round victory.

Eguavoen’s warning comes as the Super Falcons begin a tie in which discipline and concentration will be central to their hopes of moving on to the next stage.
