Belgian Pro League side KRC Genk have rewarded Nigerian defender Christian Akpan with a new four-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2030, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The new deal reflects the club's confidence in the 21-year-old's long-term development after his steady rise through the ranks since joining Genk in 2023.

Akpan progressed through the club's youth setup before earning promotion to the senior team, where he has continued to impress with his versatility and consistent performances.

The defender enjoyed a memorable first-team debut against Gent last season, delivering a commanding display that earned him the Man of the Match award.

Since breaking into the senior side, Akpan has made 59 appearances across all competitions for the Belgian outfit.

Genk's Head of Football, Dimitri de Condé, welcomed the contract extension, highlighting the Nigerian's tactical value to the team.

"We are pleased that Christian wants to commit his future to our club. Furthermore, due to his versatility, he is an extremely interesting profile for the technical staff. Players like him give coaches the ability to switch tactics during a match if necessary," De Condé told the club's official website.

Akpan recently celebrated another career milestone after making his senior international debut for Nigeria in a friendly against Portugal.

The defender started the encounter before being replaced by Abdullahi Bewene in the 60th minute as the Super Eagles suffered a 2-1 defeat.

With his future now secured at Genk, Akpan will be aiming to build on his impressive progress and establish himself as a key figure for both club and country in the coming seasons.
