Chelsea have recruited 18-year-old defender Honest Ahanor from Atalanta, although the Italy Under-? No, can't add. Need avoid. "The move will not be completed until mid-2027, with the centre-back set to spend one more season in Bergamo before joining the Blues."
Ahanor, a defender of Nigerian origin, made a strong impression during his first campaign with Atalanta, appearing in 35 matches. His performances have led Chelsea to secure his future while allowing him to continue developing in Serie A.
The agreement means Ahanor has already established where he will play beyond his next season. Rather than moving to England immediately, he will remain with Atalanta for another campaign before linking up with Chelsea’s squad in mid-2027.
The teenager joined Atalanta one year ago from Genoa. That move followed his first appearances in Serie A, giving him an early opportunity to gain experience in Italy’s top flight.
His first season with the Bergamo club provided a significant platform. He featured 35 times, and Chelsea have now chosen to bring him into their long-term plans while keeping him in an environment where he can continue to play at Serie A level.
The arrangement also reflects the competition for places that already exists in Chelsea’s central-defensive group. The Blues currently have Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Josh Acheampong, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino and Jorrel Hato available in that area.
Ahanor will therefore have another season to add to his experience before making the move to Stamford Bridge. By the time the transfer takes place, he will have spent further time competing in Serie A with Atalanta, having already established himself as part of the club’s plans.
Chelsea’s recruitment of the defender is now official, but his arrival in the first-team squad remains in the future. The club have secured Ahanor’s next destination while Atalanta retain him for one additional season, with the transfer scheduled for the middle of 2027.
That timetable gives Ahanor continuity after his breakthrough campaign and leaves him with another year of regular exposure to Italian football before he begins his Chelsea career.
