Alvarez winner sends Atletico Madrid to eighth LaLiga victory

Julian Alvarez scored the only goal as Atletico Madrid beat Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 at the Metropolitano to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions and move within two points of LaLiga leaders Barcelona.

Atletico Madrid controlled much of the opening period, with Alvarez heavily involved in their most promising attacks. The forward pulled an effort wide from the edge of the penalty area before using a piece of skilful footwork to create an opportunity for Pablo Barrios, who sent his shot over the bar.

Deportivo La Coruna gradually grew into the game and showed why they had suffered only two defeats in LaLiga before this match, alongside two wins and five draws.

The visitors came close to taking a surprise lead when Yeremay Hernandez’s free-kick was pushed away by Jan Oblak. The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper then made an excellent second save to keep out Lorenzo Amatucci’s follow-up.

That was Deportivo’s only serious opening before the interval, while the hosts missed several chances of their own. Lee Kang-in and Morten Hjulmand both fired over as Atletico Madrid continued to press for the breakthrough.

They did not have to wait long after the restart. Alejandro Grimaldo delivered a dangerous cross into the area and Alvarez produced a typically composed finish into the bottom corner.

It was Alvarez’s second goal in as many games as he continues to rebuild his relationship with the club following a failed transfer this summer. The strike also meant Atletico Madrid had opened the scoring in nine of their 10 LaLiga matches this season.

Atletico Madrid threatened to add to their lead when Alex Baena’s effort was comfortably held by Leo Roman. Centre-back David Hancko then tried his luck from distance but saw his attempt narrowly clear the crossbar.

The home side remained comfortable despite their narrow advantage and used the closing stages to introduce several substitutes. One of them, Alexander Sørloth, came close to scoring when his powerful effort brushed Roman’s palm.

As in last weekend’s meeting with Espanyol, one goal proved enough for Atletico Madrid to secure victory. It was their eighth league win of the season, with one draw and one defeat, and extended their unbeaten record in competitive meetings with Deportivo La Coruna to 15 matches, including 12 wins and three draws.

Deportivo La Coruna showed determination but lacked the quality required to find an equaliser. Their winless run has now reached six games, comprising three draws and three defeats.
