Tolu Arokodare has been rewarded for his impressive start to life at Ajax with a recall to the Nigeria squad, 10 months after his last international selection.
The 25-year-old striker has quickly become a favourite with supporters at the Johan Cruijff ArenA after rediscovering his best form in Amsterdam. He is at Ajax on a season-long loan, with the club holding an option to sign him permanently for about €20m.
Arokodare has moved ahead of Marcos Leonardo and Kasper Dolberg in Ajax’s current attacking order, scoring five goals and providing two assists in eight matches.
His performances have now earned him another opportunity with the Super Eagles. He was left out of Nigeria’s squads for the past two international breaks, during which the team failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Nigeria manager Eric Chelle’s side will face Madagascar on 25 September before playing Guinea-Bissau on 29 September in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Arokodare has won 10 international caps for Nigeria so far, but he faces significant competition for a place in the team, including from Victor Osimhen.
