Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed interim head coach of Nigeria’s Senior Women’s National Team, the Super Falcons, for their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying ties against Comoros in October.
The former Super Eagles head coach will lead the 10-time African champions while the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues its search for a permanent manager.
Eguavoen, widely known as ‘Cerezo’, brings significant international experience to the role. He guided the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
He will be supported by Christopher Danjuma, head coach of Nigeria Women’s Football League side Nasarawa Amazons. Danjuma has held several roles within Nigeria’s women’s national-team structure and was in charge of the Falconets at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa has been appointed to the same position with the Super Falcons. He has worked with a number of Nigeria’s national sides, including the Super Eagles, CHAN Eagles, Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets.
Former Super Falcons defender and coach Ayisat Yusuf is also part of the interim coaching team as an assistant coach.
Yusuf won 68 international caps for Nigeria during her playing career. She represented the country at four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, three FIFA Women’s World Cups and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Comoros ties to be played in Ikenne-Remo
Nigeria will enter the Olympic qualifying competition in the second round against Comoros, with both matches scheduled to be played at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.
The first leg is set for 9 October 2026, with the return fixture taking place at the same venue on 13 October.
The Super Falcons were given a bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams in the competition. Comoros reached this stage after beating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.
Nigeria must negotiate four rounds of two-legged knockout ties to claim one of the two places available to African teams at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
If they eliminate Comoros, the Super Falcons will move into the third round, which is scheduled to take place from 23 February to 6 March 2027. Their opponents at that stage will be either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco.
Progress to the fourth round would bring a tie against one of Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic or Mali. Those matches are scheduled for 4 to 12 October 2027.
The final qualifying round is due to be played between 23 November and 4 December 2027. Nigeria could face Guinea, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Central African Republic, Algeria or Burkina Faso in that stage.
The winner of the final tie will secure a place at the 2028 Olympic Games, with Africa allocated two qualifying spots.
