Rayan Cherki has responded strongly to criticism in France after Monday’s Nations League victory over Belgium, insisting his performances must be judged in the context of his adaptation to a new position.
The Manchester City forward, formerly of OL, has come under scrutiny from sections of the French public during a period he says is about learning new responsibilities. Cherki believes he needs time to settle into the role before he can consistently reproduce his best form.
Speaking to TF1 after the match, he said: “You have talked about my dribbles and my passes, but I am playing in a role now where I am pushing myself to produce complete and disciplined performances.
“Those who really understand football know that. Those who think otherwise do not understand the situation. I have learned to play in a new position. I have to produce clean and consistent performances, and it is a position I like. As time goes on, you will see that it becomes a more natural position for me.”
Cherki began the match on the substitutes’ bench but made a notable impact after coming on. He scored France’s second goal in the 81st minute, finishing from a pass by Michael Olise.
The goal also gave Cherki the opportunity to address reports of a possible disagreement between himself and the Bayern player.
“There is extraordinary unity within the group,” he said. “You cannot see that because it happens privately, between us. I have rarely experienced a group that plays so well from the first player to the last.
“That includes everyone from the first member of the squad to the last member of staff. It is something we really enjoy, and you can feel it on the pitch.”
