Daniel Banjaqui: Benfica teenager linked with five possible career paths

Published on: 18 October 2026

At 18, Daniel Banjaqui is attracting interest from several leading European clubs. The Portuguese right-back, who came through the Benfica academy and is under contract until 2031, is emerging as one of the young players whose future could become a major talking point in upcoming transfer windows.

Interest has reportedly come from England, Italy, Spain and Germany, while Banjaqui also has the option of continuing his development in Portugal.

Premier League interest

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Newcastle and Manchester United are monitoring the defender. Chelsea and Liverpool have also been linked with the player in recent reports.

A move to England would give Banjaqui the chance to test himself in a demanding competition against some of Europe’s leading attackers. However, competition for places at those clubs could make his adaptation difficult. Any transfer would therefore need to offer a clear sporting plan, realistic opportunities to play and room for continued development.

Serie A provides a tactical route

Banjaqui, who is of Bissau-Guinean origin, is also reportedly attracting attention in Italy. Inter Milan and Juventus are said to be interested, while AS Roma have been mentioned among the clubs following his progress.

According to TuttoJuve, Juventus may view Banjaqui as a long-term option. Serie A could offer him a suitable environment in which to learn the tactical demands of Italian football, particularly defensively. At his age, he could work on his positioning, reading of the game and consistency before taking on a more prominent role.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid linked

FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are among the Spanish clubs associated with the young defender. LaLiga could suit Banjaqui because of its emphasis on technical ability and quality in possession.

Barcelona may be attracted by his potential, while Atletico Madrid could provide a demanding setting in which to strengthen his defensive qualities. Neither possibility has been confirmed officially, however, and any move to Spain would need to support a gradual progression through the stages of his development.

Bundesliga opportunity

Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have also been mentioned as clubs monitoring Banjaqui’s situation. A move to the Bundesliga could provide another suitable step, particularly if the chosen club offered a development pathway appropriate for an 18-year-old.

The intensity of German football and its emphasis on quick transitions could help him improve physically and become more effective going forward. Reported interest does not mean negotiations are under way, though, and gaining experience without disrupting his development would remain the priority.

Staying at Benfica

Banjaqui could instead continue his progress at Benfica. His contract runs until 2031 and reportedly includes an €80m release clause, leaving the Lisbon club in a strong contractual position.

Remaining in Portugal would allow him to become more accustomed to senior football, build playing time and gain maturity before considering a move abroad. Benfica may also prefer to retain him and further develop his potential. In the short term, staying could be the most cautious option, provided he has sufficiently attractive sporting prospects.

No destination is guaranteed. His playing opportunities, development and Benfica’s financial demands will all be important, while the quality of the next sporting project could prove as significant as the fee involved.
