The opening weeks of the 2026/27 Ligue 1 season have proved difficult for several African players, with limited playing time, a lack of attacking output, adaptation problems and injury all affecting their campaigns.
Here are five players whose situations merit particular attention after the early rounds of the French top flight.
Mohamed Ouedraogo – Olympique Lyonnais
Burkina Faso left-back Mohamed Ouedraogo is still adjusting to life at Olympique Lyonnais after joining the club in the summer of 2026.
The 23-year-old has featured in five matches in all competitions, registering one assist and playing 216 minutes. His performances have been identified as one of the problems facing Lyon on the left side of defence, with L’Equipe highlighting the position as an area requiring improvement.
Ouedraogo will need to find greater consistency if he is to establish himself in his manager’s plans. He has previously said: “Lyon is the best place to take the next step.”
Faris Moumbagna – Olympique de Marseille
Cameroon striker Faris Moumbagna has had very little opportunity to make an impression at Olympique de Marseille this season.
He has played just 17 minutes across five Ligue 1 appearances, although he has provided one assist. The limited involvement has restricted his chance to regain match sharpness and persuade the Marseille coaching staff to give him greater responsibility.
Gaziantep FK showed an interest in signing Moumbagna on loan during the summer transfer window. According to Africafoot, the Turkish Super Lig club wanted to bring in the Cameroon international on a temporary deal.
Billal Brahimi – Le Mans
Algerian winger Billal Brahimi is also waiting for a sustained opportunity at Le Mans. He has made five league appearances but has played only 96 minutes, without scoring or providing an assist.
Used mainly as a substitute or in a secondary role, Brahimi will need to make the most of his next chances to move higher in the attacking pecking order and have a greater influence on his team’s play.
Jim Allevinah – Angers
Gabon international Jim Allevinah has yet to produce a goal or assist for Angers after the first seven Ligue 1 matches, despite starting several games.
His lack of attacking numbers has come during a difficult spell for the SCO, who suffered heavy defeats by Brest, losing 5-1, and Marseille, going down 5-2. The 31-year-old forward will be expected to rediscover his effectiveness as Angers look to change their fortunes.
Yacouba Kone – Troyes
For 19-year-old Ivorian striker Yacouba Kone, the setback has been compounded by a serious knee injury.
His season had already begun with limited playing time before he was injured against Angers on 19 September. Kone came on as a substitute but was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher after only five minutes.
Troyes manager Stephane Dumont expressed pessimism afterwards and raised the possibility of a cruciate ligament rupture. The injury could significantly interrupt Kone’s development.
The players’ market values are listed as €2m for Mohamed Ouedraogo, €3.5m for Faris Moumbagna, €1m for Billal Brahimi, €1m for Jim Allevinah and €300,000 for Yacouba Kone.
