Gouiri’s late winner ends Marseille’s Europa League losing run

Olympique de Marseille secured their first points of the Europa League campaign with a 1-0 victory away to Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday.

Amine Gouiri settled a closely contested match in the 77th minute, producing an outstanding strike which beat the German goalkeeper and gave the visitors all three points on the fourth matchday.

The 26-year-old Algeria international’s finish proved the decisive moment of the game, allowing Marseille to leave Germany with an important win after a difficult start to their European campaign.

Olympique de Marseille had lost each of their opening three matches in the competition. Victory over Bayer Leverkusen therefore provides a significant boost to their hopes of qualification, while also restoring confidence after their poor run of results in Europe.

Gouiri, who is under contract with Olympique de Marseille until 2029, is valued at 30 million euros by Transfermarkt. His goal in a crucial away fixture once again underlined his importance to the club’s attacking play.
