Jordy Makengo is emerging as one of the players to watch at Fribourg, with the 25-year-old making steady progress in the Bundesliga and already influencing his side’s early-season performances. The French-Congolese defender’s route through football, unusual physical profile and decision to represent the Democratic Republic of the Congo offer an insight into his development.
From Auxerre to the Bundesliga
Makengo began his football education at AJ Auxerre before leaving France for Germany in 2021 to join Fribourg. He initially played for the club’s reserve side, then gradually moved through the system before establishing himself within the first-team squad.
Standing at 1.91m, Makengo has a notably imposing frame for a full-back. His height and strength are among the most distinctive features of his game, helping him compete effectively in physical challenges and giving him an advantage when contesting aerial balls.
His development in Germany has therefore involved more than simply adapting to a new league. Makengo has progressed from reserve-team football to a regular role around the senior group, while continuing to build his reputation in one of Europe’s major domestic competitions.
Defensive strength and attacking contribution
Although he is primarily deployed on the left side of defence, Makengo is also able to operate centrally. His understanding of the game, athletic ability and physical power allow him to contribute in the middle of the back four when required.
The defender is particularly effective in one-on-one physical contests and in the air. Those qualities provide Fribourg with additional defensive security, while his mobility enables him to cover ground along the flank and support attacks.
Makengo has also shown that he can make a significant contribution in the final third. His start to the Bundesliga season underlines that attacking influence: he has registered 3 assists in 4 matches. That return highlights his ability to provide more than defensive cover and confirms his growing importance to Fribourg’s approach.
Choosing the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Born in Saint-Denis in the Paris region, Makengo holds both French and Congolese nationality. After taking time to consider his international future, he decided to represent the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
That decision was officially confirmed in September 2026. Makengo now gives the Leopards another option in defence, particularly on the left, while beginning a new stage of his international career.
Fribourg’s next Bundesliga fixture will be against Schalke 04 on the 11th matchday of the German championship. It will provide another opportunity for Makengo to continue his progress and demonstrate the qualities that have made him an increasingly notable presence at the club.
