Massire Sylla making his mark at Union Saint-Gilloise after Diambars development

Published on: 02 November 2026

Massire Sylla’s growing influence at Union Saint-Gilloise has come as no surprise to Diambars FC president Seydou Bocar Seck, who says the Senegalese defender has always possessed the determination to fight until the final whistle.

The 21-year-old, who can play as a central defender or defensive midfielder, played a key role in Union Saint-Gilloise’s 5-2 victory over Cercle Bruges in the ninth round of the Jupiler Pro League last weekend. Sylla scored once and helped create another goal during an impressive response to a difficult moment.

The 1.96m defender conceded an own goal in the 48th minute, but that setback did not affect his performance. Instead, he continued to compete, eventually finding the net himself and contributing to another goal as his side secured a convincing win.

Speaking exclusively to Africafoot, Seck described Sylla as a player with a strong mentality who refuses to give up. The president of Diambars FC believes the young defender’s reaction against Cercle Bruges was typical of a character that has been evident since his time at the Senegalese academy.

From Diambars FC to Belgium

Sylla joined Diambars FC several years ago and quickly attracted attention because of both his ability and his personality. At the academy, he was associated with the expression “dem ba diekh”, meaning to go all the way and never stop fighting.

His next move took him to FC Pau, where he played for the club’s reserve team. He then continued his development in Norway with Lyn 1896 FK, before being noticed by Union Saint-Gilloise’s recruitment staff.

The Belgian club signed Sylla in January 2026, giving him the opportunity to take another step in his career. His progress has continued during the opening part of the current campaign, with his performances earning him an increasingly important role.

Sylla has played 15 matches in all competitions at the start of the season. He has scored one goal and provided two assists, figures that underline his contribution despite his primary defensive responsibilities.

Seck believes the young Senegalese player is now ready to move on to a higher level. His physical presence, versatility and competitive attitude have helped him establish himself at Union Saint-Gilloise, while his response to adversity has strengthened his reputation as a player with significant potential.

Union Saint-Gilloise will next face SK Beveren in the 10th round of the Belgian championship. The match will provide Sylla with another opportunity to build on his rapid progress since arriving at the club.
