Kylian Mbappe has revealed he came close to joining Liverpool in 2017, before choosing to remain in France and sign for Paris Saint-Germain.
The France international was speaking to The Athletic about the decision he made before leaving AS Monaco, where he began his professional career.
Liverpool were a possible destination for Mbappe before his move to Paris, with his mother particularly keen for him to work under then-manager Jurgen Klopp.
“I was close to Liverpool,” Mbappe said. “My mother was a big fan of Jurgen Klopp and her preferred destination was Liverpool. She wanted me to go there.”
Mbappe ultimately chose to stay in his home country, despite his mother’s preference. He said his desire to represent the club in his home city was the deciding factor.
“I didn’t listen to her because I wanted to play in my city, Paris,” he added. “I didn’t want to leave my country before I had succeeded.”
Mbappe joined Paris Saint-Germain from AS Monaco in 2017 and later moved to Real Madrid, where he is now under contract.
