Nagelsmann not in frame for immediate RB Leipzig return after Germany exit

Julian Nagelsmann will not be returning to RB Leipzig in the immediate future, despite remaining highly regarded in German football following his departure as Germany head coach.

Nagelsmann could have been in line for a new role only four months after leaving the national team. Germany’s World Cup campaign ended with a penalty shootout defeat by Paraguay in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After discussions with the DFB, Nagelsmann resigned from his position. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has since taken over as Germany head coach.

Nagelsmann’s reputation remains strong in Germany after he spent two seasons at RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich before becoming national team coach in 2023.

However, there are no current plans for him to replace RB Leipzig manager Martin Demichelis. The Argentine is under pressure after a mixed start to the 2026/27 campaign, but Red Bull football chief Roger Schmidt has dismissed suggestions that the club is preparing to make a change.

“These rumours are normal these days. In football, you have to address such issues when you lose games,” Schmidt said.

“We are far from looking to change coach.”
