"People should temper expectations regarding NPFL title" Ikorodu City

Published on: 05 December 2024

Ikorodu City chairman Sanmi Doherty has tempered expectations surrounding his team's chances of winning the 2024-25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Despite being unbeaten in their last six NPFL matches, Doherty has dismissed claims that his team can lift the trophy.

Ikorodu City currently occupy third position on the NPFL table with 24 points, four points adrift of leaders Rivers United.

However, Doherty is cautious about getting carried away with his team's recent form, stating that his primary focus is on ensuring the players enjoy their games and maintain consistency throughout the campaign.

"I believe people should temper expectations regarding NPFL title ambitions and securing a continental ticket," Doherty told Flashscore.

"We're not under pressure to achieve these goals. We'll keep focusing on taking it one step at a time and see how far we can progress."

Doherty emphasized the importance of his players enjoying their football, stating that this is crucial to their success.

"Honestly, we're not getting carried away, nor are we under any pressure to succeed," he said.

"We're simply focusing on our approach, regardless of whether it's about relegation or anything else.

"My players are enjoying their game, and I believe that's what matters most for them. I always remind them, 'Stay focused on what you're doing and enjoy it. If you're not enjoying what you do, then it loses its value.'"
