The debate over Vinicius Jr’s place in the Real Madrid starting XI has intensified after Yan Diomande’s lively second-half display in the 2-1 derby defeat by Atletico.
The Brazilian produced another subdued performance on Sunday before being replaced shortly after Dean Huijsen was sent off. Jose Mourinho responded by bringing on Diomande and Antonio Rudiger as he reshaped his side, but the changes could not prevent Real Madrid from losing.
Diomande’s introduction nevertheless gave the visitors greater pace and directness, reviving questions about the attacking hierarchy at the club.
Vinicius form under scrutiny
The concerns surrounding Vinicius extend beyond the derby. His performances since the beginning of the season have prompted increasing discussion, with analysis indicating that his shot accuracy, conversion rate for big chances and dribbling numbers are close to the lowest levels of his career.
He struggled to influence the first half against Atletico, and Mourinho’s decision to remove him after Huijsen’s dismissal added to the focus on the forward’s current form. The change also highlighted the growing interest in Diomande, who has begun to make an impression during his early appearances for Real Madrid.
The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international joined from RB Leipzig this summer for 125m euros, with a further 15m euros potentially payable in bonuses. That deal made him the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history and has placed significant expectations on him from the outset.
Against Atletico, Diomande completed seven dribbles, touched the ball 19 times in the final third and repeatedly used his acceleration to unsettle the opposition. He did not provide an assist, while his effort was saved by Jan Oblak, but his ability to carry the ball and attack defenders offered a different threat.
Those qualities explain why some supporters and observers are calling for Diomande to be given a more regular starting role. His direct running provides Mourinho with another way to create danger, particularly when Real Madrid’s attack lacks urgency or penetration.
The decision, however, is not simply a choice between Vinicius and Diomande. Mourinho must balance an attack that also includes Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler, with the club’s forward line already representing one of the manager’s main selection dilemmas before the derby.
Mourinho has recently stressed the competition within his squad and the importance of managing rotations. He also continues to believe Vinicius can recover his effectiveness when the most important moments arrive.
Diomande’s promising cameos do not yet provide enough evidence to establish a new order, given his limited experience at Real Madrid. Equally, Vinicius cannot rely indefinitely on his status and past achievements at the club if his performances remain below expectations.
Mourinho must now decide whether Vinicius retains his place automatically or whether Diomande has earned more than a role as an impact substitute. The key issue will be finding the attacking combination and approach that can make Real Madrid more threatening in the opposition half.
