Cristian Romero believes Lionel Messi should win the Ballon d’Or every year until he ends his career.
The Atletico Madrid and Argentina defender has supported his international team-mate ahead of next month’s ceremony, where Messi is nominated for the 17th time.
“The Ballon d'Or should be given to Leo Messi. Until he retires, that’s clear,” Romero told ESPN.
“There is no one like him. Surely when he decides not to play anymore, then we will have to see who to give it to!”
Messi, a former Barcelona player, has won the prestigious award eight times. His victories came in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023.
The 2006 ceremony was the first time Messi was nominated, meaning his latest inclusion comes 20 years after his debut on the shortlist.
He has been recognised again after scoring 45 goals and providing 30 assists in 49 appearances for Inter Miami during the 2025–26 season. Messi also helped Inter Miami win the MLS title and reached the World Cup final with Argentina, scoring 8 goals.
Despite those achievements, the 2026 award is not expected to be a straightforward contest for Messi. He is not regarded as the leading contender, with Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal and Harry Kane among the players considered more likely to claim the prize.
The winner will be announced in London on 26 October 2026.
Kane, the former Tottenham striker, could become the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or in more than two decades. Michael Owen was the last English recipient, taking the award in 2001.
