Patrik Schick scored in the final minute of normal time to earn Bayer Leverkusen a 2-2 draw at Augsburg and deny the hosts a historic third consecutive win at the start of a Bundesliga season.
The result moved Leverkusen up to sixth, while Augsburg dropped to third despite extending their unbeaten home run to five matches.
Leverkusen began strongly at the WWK Arena, with Moussa Diaby, Ezequiel Fernandez and Ibrahim Maza all testing Augsburg’s defence during the opening 15 minutes.
Their pressure was rewarded when Christian Kofane ran on to Edmond Tapsoba’s long pass and calmly sent the ball beyond Finn Dahmen. The match was Dahmen’s 100th Bundesliga appearance.
Augsburg struggled to impose themselves before the interval. Arijon Ibrahimovic had their only notable early attempt, while Leverkusen continued to dominate possession and territory.
The visitors had registered eight shots as half-time approached, underlining their superiority in a first half played in a subdued atmosphere. Noahkai Banks was Augsburg’s most impressive player during that period, although he was booked shortly before the break.
Aleix Garcia continued to cause problems for the home defence after the restart, with Augsburg appearing short of confidence. However, an error from Leverkusen goalkeeper Mark Flekken transformed the contest.
Flekken hesitated as Michael Gregoritsch moved in front of him, allowing the Augsburg forward to prod the ball over the line and bring the hosts level.
Gregoritsch then completed a rapid turnaround within two minutes, rising unmarked to head in from a corner and put Augsburg ahead.
Leverkusen thought they had restored parity before the hour mark, but a VAR review ruled out the goal for a foul. The decision added to an increasingly open and physical contest.
The visitors maintained their attacking intent and eventually found the equaliser through substitute Schick, who struck for a third consecutive match.
The point prevented Augsburg from recording three victories in their first three games of a season for the first time in the club’s history. They also extended their unbeaten home sequence to five matches, although their failure to win saw them fall to third in the table.
Leverkusen remain unbeaten in September since 2022, a run which now stands at 10 wins and five draws.
Michael Gregoritsch was named Flashscore’s Man of the Match.
