Senegalese players were at the centre of several of the summer transfer window’s biggest moves, with a number of internationals changing clubs in deals worth tens of millions of euros.
The most significant operation involving a Senegalese player saw Iliman Ndiaye linked with a move to Manchester City for a reported €76m. The deal placed Ndiaye among the most valuable transfers involving players from Senegal during a busy period for the country’s footballers.
Nicolas Jackson also completed a major move, joining Aston Villa in a deal worth €55.5m. The transfer added another Senegalese international to the list of players moving to prominent European clubs during the window.
Lamine Camara was expected to follow a similar path after Chelsea agreed a €55m move for the player. However, the transfer was cancelled in the final hours of the window, meaning Camara ultimately did not make the move to Stamford Bridge.
Aston Villa were involved in another significant deal involving a Senegalese player. Ibrahim Mbaye joined the club from Paris Saint-Germain for €55m, giving the English side two new arrivals from Senegalese football within the same transfer period.
West Ham also secured one of Senegal’s leading players, with El Hadji Malick Diouf moving to the London club for €40.8m. His transfer was another high-value agreement involving a Senegalese footballer and further underlined the demand for players from the country across Europe.
There was also movement involving Pape Matar Sarr, although his transfer took a different form. The midfielder left Tottenham to join Juventus on loan, adding a move between two major European clubs to Senegal’s activity in the window.
Taken together, the deals made Senegalese players prominent figures in the summer market. Several internationals moved between leading clubs, while the combined value of the permanent transfers reached substantial levels.
The activity included completed transfers to Manchester City, Aston Villa and West Ham, as well as the proposed move to Chelsea that fell through shortly before the window closed. Alongside those permanent deals, Sarr’s loan switch to Juventus provided another notable change of destination.
The series of moves ensured that Senegalese footballers played a major part in the European transfer market. With deals involving some of the continent’s best-known clubs and several operations worth more than €40m, the summer window was marked by a strong presence from players representing Senegal.
