Simeone Backs Lookman Despite Admitting Super Eagles Star Is Below His Best

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has backed Ademola Lookman to rediscover his best form, despite acknowledging that the Super Eagles forward has yet to meet the expectations of both himself and the Spanish club.

Speaking ahead of Atletico Madrid’s UEFA Champions League clash against Manchester United, Simeone expressed confidence in the Nigerian winger, pointing to his commitment in training and ability to take on opponents despite his recent struggles.

“Ademola isn't at the level he wants or we want, but he works hard every day,” Simeone said.

"He's a dribbler, and he needs to lose the ball sometimes. I believe in him.”

Lookman joined Atletico Madrid from Atalanta and is expected to remain an important attacking option for the Spanish side as they prepare for their European assignment against Manchester United.

Simeone’s remarks underline his continued support for the Nigerian international, even as he acknowledges that the forward has yet to produce the level of performance expected at the club.

The Atletico boss appears willing to give Lookman room to express himself on the pitch, recognising that his dribbling style naturally involves taking risks and occasionally losing possession.

Lookman will now hope to repay his manager’s faith with stronger performances as Atletico Madrid pursue their Champions League ambitions.
