Sunderland ready to revive Geny Catamo interest in January

Sunderland are considering a fresh attempt to sign Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo during the January transfer window, according to TEAMtalk.

The Mozambique international was one of the English club’s main targets during the summer, but Sporting CP refused to lower its financial demands. Newcastle United and a number of other Premier League clubs are also monitoring the 25-year-old’s situation.

Catamo’s attacking ability and effectiveness on the right side have made him an attractive option for Sunderland. However, negotiations stalled in the summer after Sporting CP insisted that any deal would have to meet the player’s 60 million euros release clause.

Sunderland were prepared to offer up to 40 million euros, but that figure was not enough to persuade the Portuguese club to sell.

Newcastle among several interested clubs

Sunderland will face competition from Newcastle United, who are also following Catamo’s progress. Everton, Leeds United, Bournemouth and Brentford are reported to have watched the winger’s performances recently.

Catamo has continued to establish himself at Sporting CP this season, scoring two goals and providing four assists in 11 appearances in all competitions.

TEAMtalk says the player remains interested in the possibility of moving to the Premier League. Sunderland must now decide whether they can meet Sporting CP’s valuation when the transfer window reopens.

Catamo is under contract with Sporting CP until 30 June 2029. Despite the Portuguese club’s 60 million euros asking price, the player is valued at 35 million euros by Transfermarkt.

Sporting CP are due to face Academico Viseu in their ninth league match of the season.
