Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says his eventual departure from the club will be marked by an emotional farewell.

The 35-year-old Netherlands defender’s contract expires at the end of the current season, and it remains unclear whether he will stay at Liverpool next summer.

Asked by Sky Sports whether he was an emotional person, Van Dijk replied: “I wouldn’t call you an emotional guy.”

“But you will see my emotions in the future when the time comes to say goodbye to the club. It will be a very emotional day. It has been an incredible journey.”

Van Dijk joined Liverpool at the start of 2018 and has made 380 appearances for the club. He has scored 36 goals and provided 16 assists during his time with the Merseyside club.
