Former Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock believes Unai Emery is the right manager to guide the club through a major rebuilding process after financial-rule problems forced the side to part with several key players.
Villa have taken only one point from their opening three matches and currently sit in the relegation zone. That represents a difficult start for a team which finished fourth last season, although Warnock’s assessment focuses on the scale of the changes around Emery rather than solely on the early league table.
The club’s financial difficulties have resulted in the departure of a number of important members of the squad. Villa have therefore had to begin the new campaign with a significantly reshaped team, placing greater importance on Emery’s ability to manage the transition.
Warnock also discussed the goalkeeping situation and said he believes Villa have found a worthy replacement for Emiliano Martinez in Zion Suzuki. The former defender added that Liverpool should regret not completing a move for the Japan international.
Suzuki was identified as a goalkeeper capable of filling the role left by Martinez, according to Warnock’s assessment. His comments come as Villa adjust to changes in a position that has been central to the team’s recent plans.
Despite the club’s early struggles in the Premier League, Emery remains at the centre of Villa’s plans as they attempt to deal with the consequences of the financial-rule issues and maintain their competitiveness across the season. Warnock’s view is that the manager is the appropriate person to oversee that process.
Villa’s immediate challenge will extend beyond their domestic campaign. Their first Champions League match of the new season is scheduled for 8 September, when they will travel to face Club Brugge.
The European fixture will come with Villa still seeking their first strong run of results after collecting one point from three league games. It will also provide an early test of how the reshaped squad responds to the demands of competing in both domestic football and the Champions League.
The contrast with last season is clear: Villa finished fourth previously, but began this campaign in the relegation places. Their position has been affected not only by results but also by the forced changes to the squad following the financial-rule problems.
Warnock’s comments therefore place the emphasis on patience with Emery as Villa begin a new phase. The former Villa defender regards the manager as the right person to lead the club, while also pointing to Suzuki as evidence that the team has been able to find a credible successor to Martinez in goal.
